The Eiffel Tower

The idea of traveling is a popular culture bucket list.  I remember traveling vicariously through the movies I watched.  I never really thought I’d have such an itch for traveling until I started to do it.  I also never thought I’d be daring enough to be a lone traveler.  But when the opportunity presented itself to me, I couldn’t help but take advantage of the opportunity.

I was sent to Europe for a team meeting I planned and managed.  I was hesitant to go at first because that meant more responsibilities and I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.  But then another part of me realize, when am I ever going to get this chance?  Work paying for my travels?!  So I said yes and never regretted it.

First stop was Amsterdam and I wish I did more research or knew what I know now because I would’ve taken advantage of that and explored more, but I didn’t.  We’ll revisit this another time but for the sake of background, I got there, explored a little, and then first stop: the absolute must in a Europe trip from the hopeless romantic in me — Paris, France.

I took the Eurorail from Amsterdam to Paris, France.  I was surprised at how big the station was and I’m glad I got there early.  I initially wanted to try to find the right platform myself, and after some time I caved and asked for directions.  I’m glad I did because I’m certain I would not have found it otherwise.  A part of me is stubborn and I don’t like to ask for help unless I absolutely needed it and well...  I needed it.

I vaguely recall it being about an hour and a half trip and I also notoriously heard how many pick pocketers there are in Europe so I was vigilant.  It was a quick trip and as soon as I got off the station, the rush excitement in me picked up. I remember seeing armed men with rifles in hand and recalled the terrors occurring in Europe broadcasted all over the news.  It was then that I felt how real it all was.  I quickly sought out my hired car and off to my hotel we went.  I saw all the main attractions of Paris in that car ride and I could not wait.

Once I got to the hotel and checked in, I quickly went out to see the Eiffel Tower.  I had to.  I took a quick walk and got there in 10 minutes.  I saw it.  As it was early evening, the lights were on and my heart skipped a beat.  I had to remind myself to catch my breath.   I was in Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower in person.  And so began my yearning to travel.
